Emily Cantrell Sheil is an experienced violist and teacher based in Berlin, Germany. Until midsummer 2018, Emily was an active freelancer in the greater Washington DC region (USA) and regular guest in the viola sections of many area orchestras such as the Richmond Symphony and the New Orchestra of Washington. Emily previous experience includes time as principal violist of Symphony Number One and as a member of the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra viola section.
Throughout the summer of 2016 Emily toured with Music in the American Wild, an Eastman-based ensemble, performing eleven newly commissioned works in seven US National Parks as part of the Park Service's centennial celebration. The ensemble's first recording project, including videos capturing the stunning vistas of the National Parks is available on ArtistShare. Chamber music engagements have included: performances as viola fellow at the Vermont Mozart Festival; an “If Music be the Food…” collaboration with Kim Kashkashian in Rochester, NY; a premier of "Bare" by composer Geoff Sheil with Molly Jones, cello in College Park, MD; the Eastman Musicale Plus series at the George Eastman House in Rochester, NY; and the Forte Chamber Music Series in Lynchburg, VA. Emily has spent her summers as a fellow at the Vermont Mozart Festival (VT USA), Lumino Festival of the Arts (CT USA), Castleton Festival (VA USA), Green Mountain Chamber Music Festival (VT USA), Brevard Music Center (NC USA), as a fellow at the Atlantic Music Festival (ME USA), as violist of the Franco-American Vocal Academy (Salzburg AT), and as Chamber Music and Library staff for the National Orchestral Institute + Festival (MD USA). |
Emily earned a Master of Music degree in Music Performance and Literature at the Eastman School of Music with Carol Rodland, and a Bachelor of Music degree at the University of Maryland, College Park with Katherine Murdock.
In her spare time, Emily enjoys running, kayaking, completing crossword puzzles, and reading everything from Jane Austen to David Foster Wallace.
